Local Food Connection's History

Local Food Connection started as a group of concerned citizens; concerned about the food they fed to their families' and about the impact that food might have on their own future and future of our planet. As they examined the food sources available to the citizens of Bethel, and researched strategies to achieve a sustainable food system they decided upon one thing: for us, local is better. From that point, LFC members set out to encourage, inspire and connect people to grow their own food and seek out local farms to buy a majority of their groceries. Since its conception, this small group has grown to include many members and take part in a variety of health and wellness planning boards, culinary enrichments, and garden projects around town. In Fall of 2014, Local Food Connection achieved a major goal in securing a fiscal sponsor. With the help of Alan Day Community Garden, Local Food Connection looks towards a brighter future with a sustainable interconnected community that relies on its neighbors to provide the food on their tables.

Our fiscal sponsor: Alan Day Community Garden

The Mission of the Alan Day Community Garden (located in Norway, Maine) is to cooperatively create an educational demonstration garden where people can grow their own food using organic, sustainable methods to support an enduring community food system. When LFC began to look for support and stability in its structure, the Community Garden was the most natural fit. With Alan Day Community Garden's support, LFC is now able to write grants giving us access to resources that can only strengthen the impact of our work. Currently, LFC will be collaborating with ADCG by helping to support them in the 2nd year of their Youth Leadership program. LFC is happy to have such a mutually beneficial partnership in the Alan Day Community Garden as we look towards the future of our organization and work. Please check out ADCG's website and be sure to like them on Facebook for the most up to date description of projects, proposals and community workshops.
